For some FREE exposure there is nothing like a
well written Press Release / Media Release. The media pick up press releases
all the time and turn them into newsworthy stories that either get published or
exposed on radio or TV.
Garnish offers a full press release writing
service, we will investigate the subject matter of the release and research to
find some interesting stats to back up what you are conveying. We will also submit the press release to the
correct media outlets and assist with any follow up activity that stems from
the press release.
When writing a press release you'll need to write
it in a certain format and remember a few key things.
Format
Headline:
Write a catchy succinct headline that doesn't
include your company name or basically say that you have a special offer on.
Journalists will not pick up stories that are purely about company promotions -
there has to be an angle to make it newsworthy and worth the space in their
publication.
Main body of story - make this copy interesting,
poignant to today's current affairs (perhaps link it to some newly revealed statistics
from a trust worthy source).
Sales Pitch - this is where you can say what it
is you really want to say, but be subtle. Hard sells do not get picked up.
Conclusion and contact details: - Conclude the
press release and make sure you include all your contact details in the last
few lines.
Date the press release in the top left hand corner.
Your press release should be no longer than one A4 sheet. Any longer and you'll
be at risk of over stating. If you have back up material to prove points in
your press release just mention that further details are available upon
request, that way if the story gets picked up - the journalist can ask for the
extra details to support the release at that time.
What should be noted is that a lot of press
releases get ignored for a variety of reasons. The most common is that the
release is not well written, it is not news worthy or just comes in at the
wrong time and they have enough news to cope with on that day. So even if you
do send out a well written piece - do not assume it will be published.
